2:14 am - An epiphany of words
There are a few of you brethren who know how seldom I post here, preferring to send private messages to make my presence known.  I thank you for your friendship.

Today I had a realization that had escaped me until now. An epiphany of sorts. Or maybe just a thwack of awareness brought on by a moment self reflection.

It occurred to me that 63 words are inadequate to define what my interests are, and that I might be judged on the basis of those 63 words. A chilling thought!

Of course my next thought was to consider how many words might be adequate to express the breadth and depth of my being -- the scope of my soul, so to speak.

After some deliberation the value 100 came to mind. At least 100! I don't want to be a word hog, but the vocabulary of my personality has at least that many! Even 250 doesn't *feel* excessive. I could easily do that and more.

I decided it would be wise to take a look at my friends lists to see how many interests they listed. Do some comparison shopping. In the process I discovered something absolutely shocking!!!!

Most of my friends show between zero and two mutual interests!  It was a horrible realization! How did I get this far without noticing such a discrepancy!?

I plan to rectify this situation immediately.

4:01 am - Free VST Chanting Tibetan Monk Plug-In
Delay Lama is the first VST-instrument to offer both vocal synthesis and a real-time animated 3D interface. Its advanced monophonic vocal synthesis engine enables your computer to sound just like an Eastern monk, with real-time, high resolution control over the vowel sound. What's more, the plug-in window displays a 3D animation of a singing monk, that reacts directly to your input!

Click for MP3 Demo [466k]

The instrument can be controlled either with a MIDI keyboard, in which case the pitchbender acts as a vowel manipulator, or with the built-in XY-controller, which allows simultaneous control over both the pitch and the vowel sound. Other controls include the portamento speed and the level of the delayed signal. All parameters are controllable via MIDI, and all incoming events are handled with sample-accuracy.

3:55 pm - Clonaid announces birth of first human clone.
Clonaid this week announced the birth of the the first human clone on December 26th, 2002. Clonaid was started in 1997 by the french race car driver turned guru, Raël, who is the spiritual leader of the Raëlian Movement. Raël claims that an extraterrestrial race called "Elohim" used genetic engineering to resurrect Jesus Christ, and that cloning is the way to achieve eternal life.

Clonaid is now selling this untested procedure to the public, and has reportedly received hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions from wealthy investors grieving from the death of a loved one, and would like to have them resurrected.

From the Clonaid site: http://www.clonaid.com/

"Three years ago, Raël, the well-known spiritual leader of the Raelian Movement, the world's largest UFO-related organization counting 55,000 people in 84 countries, founded Clonaid, the first company offering to clone human beings. In this book, he explains how today's cloning technology is the first step in the quest for eternal life."

"Once we can clone exact replicas of ourselves, the next step will be to transfer our memory and personality into our newly cloned brains, which will allow us to truly live forever. Since we will be able to remember all our past, we will be able to accumulate knowledge ad infinitum."

"Thus today, man's ultimate dream of eternal life, which past religions only promised after death in mythical paradise, becomes a scientific reality. Raël, with exceptional vision, allows us an extraordinary glimpse into an amazing future and explains how our nascent technology will revolutionize our world and transform our lives. For example, he describes how nanotechnology will make agriculture and heavy industry redundant, how super-artificial intelligence will quickly perform human intelligence, how eternal life in a computer will be possible whitout the need for any biological body, and much, much more."

"And as Raël says, don't be mistaken in thinking that this is 22nd-century science fiction. All this will happen within the next 20 years! This is a book written to prepare us for an unimaginably beautiful world, turned into a paradise, where no one needs work anymore!"

Of course, if this irresponsible genetic diddling is true it means that the world may be populated by new age idiots attempting to duplicate themselves in the technical equivalent of a high school science lab. Let's hope this newest round of eugenics is proven blatantly false, at least until more people have time to grasp its moral, ethical and spiritual implications.

11:44 am - A Bard of Thorough Secrecy
Pray, my far knowing teacher, why is it said that only a Bard of thorough secrecy knows how the Name of God is to be spoken audibly, that is to say, by the three principle columns of letters!

Because only the Bard of secrecy knows properly the old system of letters and their meaning, accent, and powers, in respect of their ability in the system of eighteen letters, for when the system of eighteen letters was established, new letters were employed for the Name of God, namely O I U, but previously, during the era of sixteen, no letters stood for the Name of God, other than the three columns of primary letters, that is / | \ , which is called the system of God and light, and only a Bard of thorough secrecy now knows properly either the one of the other of the two old systems, which I have mentioned.

11:21 pm - Subdue me please!
For those who don't know, my primary occupation for the last few years has been as an in-home nurse as my fathers prostrate cancer has progressed. Over the last month the necrotic tissue between his intestine and bladder has perforated and collapsed, allowing fecal matter to pass into his bladder, and a raging infection to pass up into the kidneys. He's well past the operable stage, but he doesn't seem to grasp that. He asked me to take him to his gastrointestinal doctor again to confirm it this past week. At first I refused, but then I went ahead and did it. It's a bit of a chore, with Dad unable to get out of bed or walk.

To lower the chances of blocking the doc recommend that I put Dad on an easily absorbed nutrient drink from Mead called "Subdue". I spoke to the hospital dietitian, who gave me some samples. The doctor gave me a prescription, recommending 6 cans a days, and gave me a prescription for 2 cases, or 48 cans, with 4 refills. Basically a months supply.

I wasn't prepared for the next shock...

I went to my pharmacist to see if insurance would cover it. The pharmacist said it is special order, is over-the-counter and not covered by insurance, and costs over $20 a can from them. She recommended I check online for a better price. CVS Online carries it for $14.10 a can. It sells for $340 a case, which is a 4 day supply. One months supply comes to $2635! Two thousand six hundred and thirty five dollars!

Out of the question. I don't have it. I can't pay it. What is heck is going on with medical and drug industry? How many people are able to pay such a price?

-- Yes, in prayer I give thanks nightly for this experience, so much of which I will never understand.

The Philosopher: I protest by the God of Heaven, that the Art is nothing else than to dissolve a Stone, and always to coagulate it, and again with the spirit of wine only, you may make perfect Elixir.

The Water of the Philosophers is called the Vessel of Hermes of which the Philosophers have written, "All means are made in our water - that is; Sublimation, Distillation, Solution, Calcination, Fixation, are done in this foresaid water, as it were in an artificial vessel, which is the greatest Secret". And water is the weight of wisemen, therefore, water and fire suffice thee for the whole work. Our water is stronger than fire because it makes a mere spirit of a body of gold, which fire cannot do, and fire is in respect to it as it were water in respect to our common fire.

7:32 pm - Simulacra and Simulations -- Baudrillard
"So it is with simulation, insofar as it is opposed to representation. Representation starts from the principle that the sign and the real are equivalent (even if this equivalence is Utopian, it is a fundamental axiom). Conversely, simulation starts from the Utopia of this principle of equivalence, from the radical negation of the sign as value, from the sign as reversion and death sentence of every reference. Whereas representation tries to absorb simulation by interpreting it as false representation, simulation envelops the whole edifice of representation as itself a simulacrum."

These would be the successive phases of the image:

1 It is the reflection of a basic reality.
2 It masks and perverts a basic reality.
3 It masks the absence of a basic reality.
4 It bears no relation to any reality whatever: it is its own pure simulacrum.

"In the first case, the image is a good appearance: the representation is of the order of sacrament. In the second, it is an evil appearance of the order of malefice. In the third, it plays at being an appearance: it is of the order of sorcery. In the fourth, it is no longer in the order of appearance at all, but of simulation."

... Finally, what is Reason ? You have often asked me ; and this is my answer :--

Whene'er the mist, that stands 'twixt God and thee,
Defecates to a pure transparency,
That intercepts no light and adds no stain--
There Reason is, and then begins her reign !

But alas !
